After missing out on a nomination for rookie of the year last week, Ke’Bryan Hayes wound up finishing sixth for the award, which was announced Monday.
The Baseball Writers Association of America named Brewers right-hander Devin Williams the National League rookie of the year, and unanimously voted for Mariners outfielder Kyle Lewis in the American League.
Hayes led all rookies in WAR (1.8) but did not get much consideration from BBWAA voters. That was mostly because he spent a majority of the season at the alternate training site after testing positive for COVID-19 before summer camp in July. He was eventually promoted to the majors on Sept. 1, where he slashed .376/.442/.682 with five home runs and 11 RBIs.
Hayes received two third place votes -- coming from Dejan Kovacevic and Pittsburgh Associated Press reporter Will Graves -- and a second place tally.
He is still rookie eligible and should be an early favorite for rookie of the year next season.
This is the end of any mention of the Pirates for awards consideration in 2020, as no other players are nominated for a BBWAA award. Jacob Stallings and Adam Frazier were nominated for Gold Gloves, but both finished second at their respective positions.
In the National League, Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm and Padres infielder Jake Croenworth both tied for second place. White Sox outfielder Luis Robert was the runner up in the American League, and Christian Javier of the Astros a distant third.
The BBWAA manager of the year awards will be announced Tuesday, followed by the Cy Young Wednesday and MVP Thursday.
