The number of Robert Morris alum to play for the Nailers organization keeps growing.
The Nailers on Tuesday announced the signing of forward Alex Tonge, the fourth all-time leading scorer in the Robert Morris men's program.
"Wheeling had interest in me, and it was an easy call, because I love what they've been doing with the organization," Tonge said in a team release. "I pride myself on being offensive and being creative when I make plays."
Tonge, 25, attended Robert Morris from 2015-19 and scored 56 goals and 82 assists in 146 games over four years. He made his professional debut in the spring of 2019 with the ECHL's Florida Everblades after the conclusion of his senior season. He spent last season with the Everblades, Adirondack Thunder, and Norfolk Admirals in the ECHL. Tonge scored a combined 12 goals and 18 assists in 47 games last season between the three teams.
"Alex is a skilled player, who is entering his second full year in the league," said Nailers head coach Mark French. "He has a history of producing at the NCAA level and last year at the ECHL level."
Tonge is 5-10, 172 pounds and is a left-handed left wing.
Tonge will be the fifth Robert Morris product to play for the Nailers in the last five years following Cody Wydo, who was with the Nailers from 2015-18, Daniel Leavens, who played for the Nailers in 2017, Zac Lynch, who played for the Nailers in the 2018-19 season, and Zac's brother Luke Lynch, who was signed to an ECHL contract this offseason.
Tonge, the Nailers have had the No. 2, 3, and 4 all-time leading scorers for the Robert Morris men's program (Zac Lynch, Wydo, Tonge).
The ECHL is set to have a split-season format next season, with a group of teams (including the Nailers) beginning play on Dec. 11 and the remaining teams starting a month later. Training camp for the teams playing in December begins Nov. 27.
