RICHMOND, Va. -- I didn’t have a ton of first-hand experience with Three Rivers Stadium, especially on the football side. I had the pleasure of attending exactly ONE Steelers game in person, a 30-14 drubbing of the Colts the day before my 21st birthday in 1992. To be honest, it was the sellout streak that always scared me away… I figured I was far too soft-spoken to negotiate with big-city scalpers with any degree of proficiency, and would end up paying an exorbitant price for nosebleed seats, or worse, counterfeit tickets.

Pirates games were a different story. I made the trip from Kent to Pittsburgh quite a few times during the heyday of the early 90s, knowing that cheap (if not particularly good) seats would usually be plentiful. With each subsequent trip, I’d try and explore more and more of the place, and by the end, I’d become at least somewhat familiar with the place and really grew to love it. Compared to the buildings that replaced it, it wasn’t much to look at… but the memories it contained were simply priceless. And from the day the first pitch was thrown in a 3-2 Pirates loss to the Reds to the final whistle in the Steelers 24-3 victory over Washington, it was ours.
