Bradenton-bound taken at PPG Paints Arena

DEJAN KOVACEVIC / DKPS

PPG Paints Arena, Fifth Avenue, Uptown.

I love snow and cold weather, so this is spoken with zero glee from the standpoint of the setting, but I'll be flying tomorrow to Bradenton to cover the first week of the Pirates' spring training.

I'm really looking forward to this. I've been a believer forever that acquiring and developing high-ceiling talent is the only path to meaningful success within Major League Baseball's obscenely imbalanced economic system, and Ben Cherington's the first GM on my watch to attempt that approach. I appreciate what it'll take to make it happen, just as I appreciate how much fun it'll be to track it along the way.

I'll share more about our baseball coverage plan in the days to come.

Expect a ton of material from me down there, beginning with columns but also including podcasts and other multimedia. Access will be limited, of course, so it'll be different than years past. But I'll do my best.

In the interim, I'll be off today while Dave Molinari and Taylor Haase double-cover Penguins-Islanders at PPG Paints Arena tonight.
