Mark Friedman with the Flyers last season

WASHINGTON -- General manager Ron Hextall got back a player he's familiar with from his time in Philadelphia.

The Penguins on Wednesday claimed defenseman Mark Friedman off waivers from the Flyers.

Friedman, 25, was the Flyers' third-round pick in 2014. He's a right-handed shot, 5 foot 11, and 185 pounds.

Friedman has spent most of his professional career to this point in the AHL with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He played one game with Philadelphia in his second pro season in 2018-19, and six games in 2019-20. He's been on the Flyers' NHL roster all season this year, but has only played in four games, recording no points and a minus-2 rating. He played as a forward in the fourth game, the Flyers' outdoor game in Lake Tahoe.

Friedman was productive in the AHL, scoring three goals and 15 assists in 45 games in 2019-20 and five goals and 21 assists in 75 games in 2018-19.

Friedman's contract runs through next season and carries a $725,000 cap hit, after which he will be a restricted free agent.

The Penguins aren't able to assign Friedman to the AHL or taxi squad without putting him on waivers, which would allow the Flyers to re-claim him. He was claimed to get a shot on the NHL roster.
