Sceviour clears waivers taken at PPG Paints Arena (Penguins)

PENGUINS

Colton Sceviour

Colton Sceviour cleared waivers at noon on Tuesday.

The Penguins now have the option to assign Sceviour to either the taxi squad or Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, but they are not required to do so. He can play up to 10 games or spend up to 30 days on the active NHL roster before the Penguins would lose that option and have to put Sceviour on waivers again if they wish to re-assign him.

If they do assign him to either the taxi squad or the AHL, then $1.075 million of his $1.2 million cap hit would no longer count toward the Penguins' salary cap. Only the remaining $125,000 would still count toward the salary cap, but he still gets paid his salary in full either way.

Sceviour, 31, was acquired from the Panthers this past offseason along with Mike Matheson in the Patric Hornqvist trade. He scored two goals in 16 games.

Mike Sullivan was asked Tuesday morning what Sceviour needs to do to make an impact in the bottom-six if he gets another opportunity there.

"We're looking for players in that bottom-six to make us harder to play against," Sullivan said. "To be reliable, trustworthy defensively. I think Colton's a guy who could help us on the penalty kill. We're looking for that group to bring us some momentum, some energy, be good on the forecheck, and then chip in on the offense here and there for us. Right now, we have a healthy competition amongst the players that we have here, and we're trying to find combinations that we think give us the best chance to win."
