Kasperi Kapanen left for the locker room early in the second period of the Penguins' game against the Sabres on Wednesday night and didn't return in the third period.
Mike Sullivan said after the game that Kapanen is being evaluated for a lower-body injury.
We can't be certain as to what is ailing Kapanen, but one possibility is that he was still feeling the effects from when he was hit by a clearing attempt somewhere in the lower leg earlier in the game.
Kapanen immediately hobbled off the ice after he was hit, but didn't go to the locker room. He limped a few feet down the tunnel, then sprawled out flat on his stomach, talking to a trainer. He stayed down for a few moments then came to his knees for a few more, but was back on the ice for his line's next shift.
This was Kapanen's last shift before heading to the locker room for good:
Jared McCann replaced Kapanen on the top power play after Kapanen left.
