Kapanen week-to-week with lower-body injury taken at PPG Paints Arena (Penguins)

GETTY

Kasperi Kapanen

Kasperi Kapanen will be sidelined on a week-to-week basis with a lower-body injury, Mike Sullivan said prior to Thursday's game against the Sabres.

Kapanen was injured in Wednesday's game when he was hit by a clearing attempt along the boards somewhere in the lower leg.

Brandon Tanev remains sidelined with an upper-body, so he won't be the guy replacing Kapanen in the lineup. Tanev remains day-to-day, his status hasn't changed.

Sullivan declined to say who would take Kapanen's spot in the forward lineup, but the news likely means that Radim Zohorna will make his NHL debut on Thursday.

"He's got good hockey sense, he has real nice hands, he can make plays," Sullivan said of Zohorna after Tuesday's practice. "For a guy that's as big as he is, he's a decent playmaker with the puck. I thought his pace was pretty good today. The tempo of the practice was high, and I thought he did a real good job of staying with the tempo."

MORE FROM THE PREGAME AVAILABILITY

• Casey DeSmith will start for the Penguins, Dustin Tokarski will start again for the Sabres.

• The Sabres' coaching staff is in COVID protocol, so general manager Kevyn Adams will be the only man behind the visiting bench.
