Tristan Jarry left the Penguins' game after the first period against the Islanders at PPG Paints Arena on Monday night and did not return.
Jarry finished the first period, stopping all five shots he faced. He did not come out of the locker room for the start of the second and was replaced by Casey DeSmith in net.
DeSmith made 19 saves on 20 shots in relief and was named the game's No. 1 star in a 2-1 win.. Because the Penguins were up 2-0 at the time of Jarry's exit, Jarry was credited with the win, not DeSmith.
Mike Sullivan said after the game that Jarry was being evaluated for an upper-body injury, and that he couldn't pinpoint when it might have happened in the period.
"I don't really have a lot of details for you at this point," he said. "It was obviously something that the medical staff felt strongly enough to take him out of the game."
Emil Larmi, the lone goaltender on the taxi squad, came out and sat on the bench at the start of the second period in full gear. He was only briefly on the bench before a coach told him to return to the locker room. NHL regulations do not permit an emergency backup goaltender to sit on the bench because they're not part of the active roster.
