No update on Jarry, but goaltender Lagace added to taxi squad taken at PPG Paints Arena (Penguins)

The Penguins on Tuesday assigned goaltender Max Lagace from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to the taxi squad.

The move comes after Tristan Jarry was apparently injured in the first period of Monday's win over the Islanders. Jarry finished the first period, but Casey DeSmith led the team onto the ice for the second period and finished the game.

"I don't really have a lot of details for you at this point, and I can't even really pinpoint when it might have happened," Mike Sullivan said after the game. "But obviously it was something that the medical staff felt strongly enough about to take him out of the game."

NHL teams are required to carry three healthy goaltenders this season between the active roster and the taxi squad.

There was no update on Jarry's status on Tuesday because it was a scheduled day off for the team. If Jarry is still injured, Lagace's recall gives the Penguins three healthy goaltenders, joining DeSmith and Emil Larmi, with Larmi also remaining on the taxi squad.

Lagace, 28, was a free agent signing by the Penguins in the offseason and has split the year so far between the taxi squad and Wilkes-Barre. He's appeared in six games in Wilkes-Barre, posting a 1.98 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.

I asked Wilkes-Barre head coach J.D. Forrest about Lagace's play after Sunday's game.

"Max has been great for us every time he's been between the pipes," Forrest said. "Our guys definitely have a high level of confidence with him in the net. He shows that calmness to him, he's got confidence. It permeates throughout the lineup. He's been nice to have."

Lagace's recall gives Wilkes-Barre three goaltenders on the roster. Alex D'Orio, who started the year in Wheeling but earned a recall after posting a .931 save percentage in his last five games there, is the presumed starter. He's played in two games with Wilkes-Barre since the recall -- one in relief and one as a start -- and recorded a .905 save percentage and a 2.19 goals-against average. The other two have yet to play an AHL game. Tommy Nappier, 22, was signed to a three-year AHL deal out of Ohio State earlier this month, and 18-year-old Brett Brochu has been with the team all season on an amateur contract because the OHL has not resumed play. Once the OHL starts back up, he must return to the London Knights.
