RICHMOND, Va. -- Hope springs eternal in baseball, and never more so than on opening day, when the slate is clean and even the most talent-barren team can celebrate the start of another season and dream of winning it all.
The 1973 Pirates were packed with talent and promise, but it’s difficult to imagine how somber the mood must have been on opening day at Three Rivers Stadium, less than 100 days after losing a beloved leader and one of the greatest players ever to lace up cleats in such a shocking, sudden fashion:
