Wormley: Steelers 'have too many other needs' to trade up for a quarterback in NFL Draft taken on the South Side (Steelers)

Chris Wormley tackles Baker Mayfield.

Everyone wants to know when the Steelers will find Ben Roethlisberger's heir at quarterback. In an NFL Draft that projects to have anywhere from three-to-five quarterbacks selected in first ten picks, that question gets louder every day.

Charley Casserly of NFL.com had the mocked Justin Fields to the Steelers this week, and Ryan Wilson of CBSSports mocked the Steelers to trade up and get the Chargers' 13th overall pick to draft Mac Jones.

Quarterback is in too high a demand for the Steelers to get their quarterback without trading up. The 49ers have already traded up with other teams considering the option as well. If Kevin Colbert was going to make that move, it would be costly.

Steelers defensive tackle Chris Wormley, who re-signed with the team in March, said Thursday on the Yinzhers podcast that he sees too many needs around him on the roster.

"I think we have too many other needs," Wormley said when asked if the Steelers would trade up for a quarterback. "Ben was gracious enough to take a pay cut because he knows he has a few more years left in the tank. He knows he can spread the wealth with that pay cut and I don't see them drafting a quarterback, especially if they can't get up to the top three or four picks. Kevin Colbert can be a wizard sometimes, but I think we have other needs that can be filled. I'm cool with that 24th pick."

Wormley is nowhere near the Steelers' war room as a defensive tackle they traded to get in the middle of the 2020 season. But he isn't wrong with his thoughts here. He knows that replacing Mike Hilton, Vince Williams, Maurkice Pouncey, Alejandro Villanueva and finding a top-tier running back are all vital to the team's path.

Dale Lolley thought so too when he argued Wednesday against trading up for a quarterback in his Talking Point, and I agree. Trading up would cost the Steelers precious second and third round picks, where valuable prospects at positions like center, tackle, cornerback and linebacker will be available.
