NEWARK, N.J. -- The Penguins have placed winger Colton Sceviour and defenseman Juuso Riikola on waivers.
If neither is claimed by noon Sunday, the Penguins will be able to assign them to the taxi squad or their American Hockey League team in Wilkes-Barre.
The Penguins could keep both (or either) on the 23-man NHL roster if they clear waivers, but waiving them could open spots that would allow players to return from injured-reserve and/or open some salary-cap space for Ron Hextall to make a trade before the deadline Monday at 3 p.m.
Sceviour, who is in the final season of a three-year contract worth $1.2 million annually, has three goals -- including one during the Penguins' 6-4 victory at New Jersey Friday -- and three assists in 31 games. He is a bottom-six forward who could appeal to a club looking for a blue-collar winger or penalty-killer.
Riikola has no points in just two appearances this season, and never really seems to have been in favor with Mike Sullivan. He has one season remaining on a contract with a salary-cap hit of $1.15 million and could attract attention from teams that see his potential to take a regular shift at this level.
