Rookie Luis Oviedo was hit hard in higher-leverage innings Monday, taking the loss in a 6-2 Pirates defeat to the Padres at PNC Park.
Oviedo (0-1) came into the game in the sixth inning with the score tied at 1. After leading off the inning with a walk to Manny Machado, Wil Myers turned on a fastball on the low, inside corner and put it on the shrubbery in center field.
Myers would chase Oviedo with two outs in the seventh inning, blooping a two-run single to cap his night. He went 3-for-5 and had five RBIs on the night, with the other opening the scoring in the first.
It was the first time Oviedo had pitched in a game since April 5, when he went two innings in Cincinnati. He went 1 ⅔ innings with five hits and two walks allowed.
Pirates’ starter Trevor Cahill bounced back from his debut against the Reds last week, going five innings of one-run ball. He allowed three hits and two walks and struck out eight, the most for a Pirate this season.
Yu Darvish (1-0) picked up his first win with the Padres, striking out six over seven innings. His only run allowed came on a Phillip Evans double in the third, which scored Adam Frazier.
Frazier tacked on the second run in the bottom of the eighth, popping up a sacrifice fly after pinch-hitter Wilmer Difo had tripled.
Evans went 2-for-4. It was his fifth multi-hit game of the season, and he has reached base safely in all nine of his games played this season.
There was a 20-minute rain delay before the game.
The Pirates and Padres will play the second game of their four-game set Tuesday at 6:35 p.m, with Chad Kuhl (0-1, 6.43) taking on Blake Snell (0-0, 1.86).
