Jeff Carter made his Penguins debut in Thursday's 2-1 shootout loss to the Flyers on Thursday night at PPG Paints Arena.

Carter centered the Penguins' second line between Jared McCann and Jason Zucker. Mark Jankowski got back into the Penguins' lineup after missing Sunday's game in New Jersey as a healthy scratch, and Radim Zohorna was the odd man out.

The Penguins were outshot 5-3 in a sloppy, scoreless first period. Their first shot on goal didn't come until there was 5:27 remaining in the period when Carter Hart denied Brian Dumoulin on a breakaway.

Sidney Crosby opened the scoring in the second period with a highlight-reel play that was a total team effort, bench included. Dumoulin broke his stick in the Penguins' zone, and Crosby handed him his own. Dumoulin used Crosby's stick to help start a breakout toward the Flyers' zone. By the time Crosby passed by the Penguins' bench on the rush up ice, associate head equipment manager Jon Taglianetti was standing up on the bench, leaning over players to get Crosby a fresh stick. Hart misplayed the puck after Kris Letang drove it to the net, and Crosby picked up the loose puck and scored. When public address announcer Ryan Mill announced the goal in the building, he announced it as "Crosby, from Letang, Dumoulin ... and Taglianetti."

Jakub Voracek tied the game at 1:24 of the third period with a wrist shot from the slot, a goal that would force overtime.

The Penguins spent the last 1:57 of overtime on the penalty kill after Crosby was called for a trip.

The game went into a shootout, and the Penguins elected to shoot first. Jake Guentzel and Claude Giroux both scored on their attempts. Crosby was stopped, and Sean Couturier scored in the second round. Letang was stopped in the third round, giving the Flyers the win.

Tristan Jarry turned away 26 of 27 shots faced through 65 minutes, while Hart stopped 31 of 32.
