Everybody thinks they know who the Steelers should select in the first round of the NFL Draft with the 24th overall pick.
There are several prospects who will most likely fall to that pick and be worthy of the selection who could contribute both right way in the 2021 season and most likely be a contributor to the franchise for at least the next 5-8 years.
But jumping at the opportunity might not be the best move for Kevin Colbert and the Steelers.
This roster still has multiple holes, but running back and center take priority over others. Still, seeking depth at several of positions like safety, linebacker and edge rusher is an idea the Steelers shouldn't scoff at after their recent shortcomings.
Each of the Steelers' recent playoff losses have come featuring significant losses due to injury that left the team weak at a position of need. Whether it was Le'Veon Bell, Ryan Shazier, Bud Dupree or Devin Bush, the Steelers have had tough luck. But what if they had a more full depth chart to help in those positions?
That's why Colbert should look at trading back from the 24th overall pick. Runs at several positions like quarterback, receiver and offensive tackle could allow several highly talented players to slip to the Steelers' pick.
But if the Steelers are in that spot, some other team could get anxious for one of those players and be willing to part ways with a second or third round pick to make up for it. That would allow the Steelers to get their primary back and address other positions.
Centers like Landon Dickerson, Josh Myers and Quinn Meinerz would be great fits in the second round, and having an extra pick there could afford Colbert a shot at cornerbacks like Asante Samuel Jr., linebackers like Jabril Cox, safeties like Jevon Holland, and offensive tackles like Dillon Radunz.
That's the real value of this year's class. Maximizing on day two picks should absolutely be part of Colbert's strategy this April.
