It appears people hear what they want to hear when it comes to press conferences.
So it was with what the Steelers had to say regarding the potential selection of a quarterback at some point in the upcoming draft later this week.
Kevin Colbert played things pretty much down the middle when quarterback was mentioned, saying the team would never pass on a potential long-term starter. That's especially true given the age of Ben Roethlisberger, who just turned 39.
"If you look at our current depth, obviously we have four NFL veteran quarterbacks on our roster, which I feel great about," Colbert said. "We also have really three of those four that are in the last year of their so-called deals when you look at it realistically. It's an unusual group in that we do have four. Can you add a young one? Absolutely. We always have to be on the look for that next guy and try to predict the value of taking that player at that position, because most likely a young quarterback won't play for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021. Again, we've got four veteran guys that we're going to try to sort through. Could you add someone that could be more guaranteed to be here for the future? Absolutely."
Mike Tomlin? His answer about the Steelers' interest in selecting a quarterback in this draft was much more telling.
"It's exciting from a coaching perspective with one of those guys being a 22-year-old guy like Dwayne Haskins who was viewed globally as having first-round talent just a short time ago," Tomlin said. "We're excited about working with him and seeing what his skill set and hoping him improve is, as well."
Does that sound like Tomlin has an interest in selecting a quarterback? Sounds like he's pretty excited to see what he has in Haskins first and foremost.
To Tomlin's point about Haskins, he actually just turned 23 May 3. And he already has two years of experience in the NFL, albeit some bad things with Washington, which selected him 15th in the 2019 draft.
But he's appeared in 16 career games -- 13 of them starts -- completing 60 percent of his passes for 2,804 yards with 12 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions.
His problems in Washington weren't all on-field things. His issues were more with off-field things, being late for meetings and hanging out with his childhood buddies when he should have been taking his job more seriously.
That's what 22-year-olds with money in their pocket for the first time do. And Haskins' biggest problem was that he got selected by his hometown team. He'll have no such distractions in Pittsburgh.
He's also still younger than a number of quarterbacks available in this draft, Florida's Kyle Trask, Georgia's Jamie Newman and Felipe Franks of Arkansas among them.
And that's the thing. Chances are, the Steelers would be selecting from that group of quarterbacks because the top five will be gone when Pittsburgh makes its first pick at 24.
So, why take Trask, Newman or someone else in the middle rounds when they already have a young quarterback on the roster who was a first-round pick two years ago? And you got him for nothing.
