WASHINGTON -- Mike Matheson was injured in the second period of Saturday's 3-0 win over the Capitals.
Matheson took Tristan Jarry's clearing attempt to the face late in the period and stayed down on the ice for a minute or so with a fair amount of blood on the ice:
Matheson got up and skated to the locker room under his own power, holding a towel to the left side of his face. He did not return for the third period.
"It was tough to see Mikey go down," Cody Ceci said after the game of his defensive partner. "Just kind of took a fluke puck off the face. It changes things up a bit, you get different partners. You're playing a little more. We just tried to keep it simple. We had the lead, we were just trying to keep the lead, play smart, and keep (shifts) short."
Mike Sullivan did not have an update on his status after the game.
“Obviously, he got hit in the face with the puck," Sullivan said. "I haven’t got the details. We’ll have to update you later.”
