When Casey DeSmith come out of the locker room with the Penguins for the third period on Monday and Tristan Jarry took over in net, it was a little surprising.
The Penguins were down 4-0 to the Flyers at the time, but DeSmith was coming off of a fine second period, stopping 16 of 17 shots in the middle frame.
Mike Sullivan said after the 7-2 loss Monday that DeSmith being pulled from the game wasn't performance-related. DeSmith suffered a lower-body injury, for which he was still being evaluated.
It's not clear when or how DeSmith suffered the injury.
DeSmith took the loss in the game, making 33 stops on 37 shots through two periods. Jarry made five saves on seven shots in relief.
If DeSmith is unable to play on Tuesday, it's not yet clear who would back up Jarry. Emil Larmi is the only goaltender currently on the taxi squad after the No. 3 goaltender, Max Lagace, was sent down to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last week to get some playing time for the first time in three weeks, but could be recalled before the game to serve as backup. Lagace played in just one game since being sent down, and stopped 30 of 34 shots in an overtime loss on Saturday, highlights of which can be found here.
