The Flyers' Shayne Gostisbehere was suspended for two games for boarding Mark Friedman in Tuesday's game, the NHL department of player safety announced on Wednesday.
Gostisbehere was trailing Friedman as Friedman was carrying the puck toward the Flyers' empty net near the end of the game. After Friedman scored, Gostisbehere crosschecked the unsuspecting Friedman in the back, sending him tumbling into the boards.
Gostisbehere received a two-minute minor for crosschecking on the play.
The department of player safety's ruling notes that Gostisbehere adjusted his skating path and took a hard stride to reach Friedman, and that the shove took place well after the time when Friedman should have reasonably been prepared for contact.
Friedman doesn't seem to be too popular among his former teammates after the Penguins claimed him off waivers from Philadelphia earlier in the season. Friedman dropped the gloves with Joel Farabee earlier in Tuesday's game:
Friedman was tied with Cody Ceci for the most hits taken by any Penguin in the game, with six.
Friedman's first two games after he was claimed off waivers were also against the Flyers, and he was taking a beating in those games, too. He drew a roughing penalty from Michael Raffl near the end of his first game as a Penguin, and then winked at Raffl as Raffl went off to the penalty box.
"It was quite funny to give it to some of them and draw that penalty at the end," Friedman said after that game.
Friedman doesn't seem to have any warm feelings toward Philadelphia either.
“(Pittsburgh) is more of a homier feel than Philadelphia,” Friedman told the Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle in March. “It’s not as busy, not as noisy, nicer people. It’s not as dirty, especially in Cranberry where I live. It’s just a great neighborhood.”
