The Penguins congratulate Max Lagace on the win after Lagace shut out the Sabres at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday

For the first time since 2013-14, the Penguins have clinched a regular season division title.

The Penguins' 1-0 shutout of the Sabres, followed by the Capitals failure to win in regulation against the Flyers on Saturday night clinched the East Division title for the Penguins and home ice advantage for at least the first round of the playoffs, as well as the second round of the playoffs should they make it there.

It's the ninth division title for the Penguins in franchise history. Their first, in 1991, led to their first Stanley Cup.

The Penguins finished this season with 77 points from a 37-16-3 record.

The Capitals won in overtime, 2-1, securing them the No. 2 seed, so the Penguins will face either the Islanders or Bruins in the first round of the playoffs, whichever team finishes lower in the standings.

The Bruins currently sit in third place with 71 points and two games remaining, a game against the Islanders and a game against the Capitals. The Islanders are currently the fourth seed with 70 points, with the game against the Bruins being their only game left in the season.

"We wanted to gain home ice advantage," Mike Sullivan said when I asked about clinching home ice after Saturday's game. "Obviously, we were thrilled that we were able to do that. Having said that, we know we're going to get a difficult opponent. All the teams that advanced are really good hockey teams."
