The Penguins will open the playoffs against the Islanders, it's official.

The Islanders and Bruins faced off on Monday in a game with the potential to decide the third and fourth seeds in the division. The Islanders needed to win in regulation, and the Bruins needed to also lose their final game on Tuesday against Washington in order for the Islanders to leapfrog the Bruins in the standings.

The Bruins and Islanders game went to overtime, giving the Bruins the point they needed to secure the third seed in the East Division. The Bruins will play the No. 2-seeded Capitals in a series that opens Saturday, and the Islanders will play the Penguins. There hasn't been an announcement on the start date for the Penguins-Islanders series.

The Penguins went 6-2 against the Islanders in the regular season series, a better record than the 3-4-1 record they had against the Bruins.

The Penguins averaged 3.25 goals per game against the Islanders in the regular season series. It was their second-lowest average in any of the regular season series this year, trailed only by the 2.38 goals per game they averaged against the Bruins.

The Penguins allowed an average of 2.38 goals against per game in the regular season series against the Islanders, their second-best average against any team this season, and the best against any playoff team. Only the Sabres scored fewer goals against the Penguins this season, averaging 1.75 per game.
