Swaggerty considering surgery after dislocating shoulder taken at PNC Park (Pirates)

Travis Swaggerty in spring training.

Last week, Travis Swaggerty exited early in a game diving back to first base on a pickoff throw attempt.

On Wednesday, director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk told reporters that Swaggerty dislocated his right shoulder.

Surgical and non-surgical options are still being considered. A timetable for his return was not given.

“At this time, Travis is still learning about what each of them looks like,” Tomczyk said.

This injury comes at a time where Swaggerty’s trajectory was definitely up. General manager Ben Cherington said earlier this month that Swaggerty was one of the Pirates’ most consistent hitters at the alternate site, and he became the first Pirates prospect to skip Class AA Altoona.

His 2021 season is up in the air, depending on how long he will be sidelined. Originally it looked like he would have a chance of being promoted to the majors this season, but the amount of time he misses could determine if that happens.

He will need to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

MORE INJURY UPDATES

Chad Kuhl made his second rehab start Tuesday, striking out four over 3 ⅓ innings of one-hit ball. He spoke with the pitching team Tuesday, and the early signs are there is no soreness or symptoms with his right shoulder.

Steven Brault (left lat strain) has progressed to throwing out to 105 feet, and Tomczyk envisions him throwing to 120 by week’s end. That’s usually the final benchmark of a throwing program before transitioning to pitching again.

Jose Soriano (Tommy John) has started his rehab assignment, and the “early signs of his pitch development and pitch recovery is very positive." Cherington mentioned earlier this week that he be built up as a starter during his assignment, which would entail more build up. Soriano didn't make it out of the first inning of his rehab start with Class A Bradenton on Wednesday. He was charged with seven runs, six earned, on five hits and three walks, and threw just 36 pitches.

Trevor Cahill (left calf) threw a side session Wednesday. The early signs indicate that he has recovered well. Austin Davis (left elbow) continues his rehab assignment in Indianapolis.

Phil Evans (hamstring) and Colin Moran (groin) are both expected to start running this weekend, though Moran is about a day behind Evans in terms of recovery.

• “No issues of any wrist symptoms” for Ke’Bryan Hayes in his rehab assignment. He is eligible to come off the injured list June 3.
