RICHMOND, Va. -- Baseball and the Fourth of July. Two iconic aspects of America that are so ingrained as a perfect fit for one another that it seems like they’ve been intertwined forever…but this blissful combination had to start somewhere.
In the PBC’s case, the tradition has been going on for exactly 139 years. 1882 marked not only the first time the then-Pittsburg Alleghenys played on Independence Day, but the franchise's first-ever extra innings win, as well.
