Source: Kranick to make second start for Pirates vs. Mets taken in New York (Pirates)

NEW YORK -- Max Kranick will get one more look in the majors before the All-Star break.

A source tells DK Pittsburgh Sports that the right-hander will make another start this series against the Mets.

Kranick was seen throwing with the Pirates’ pitchers at Citi Field Thursday, shortly before the game with the Mets was postponed due to rain.

He was originally going to pitch Friday, but will likely be pushed back to throwing one of the games in Saturday's doubleheader.

In his first start on June 27, Kranick threw five perfect innings against the Cardinals before being forced out due to rain. He is the only player in the modern era to not allow a base runner and pitch at least five innings in their debut.

However, even though the Pirates announced they would be using a six-man rotation through the All-Star break, they had told Kranick he would only be up in the majors for the one day.

"He did a good job," Derek Shelton said on June 28. "We wanted another bullpen arm."

Cody Ponce made the start in that sixth spot last Saturday, and allowed five runs while only getting five outs. Friday is the final day that sixth spot will be due before the break.

Kranick, 23, is ranked as the Pirates' No. 26 prospect by MLB Pipeline. He reworked his throwing mechanics last year during the shutdown before impressing at the alternate training site. The Pirates added him to the 40-man roster this offseason to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

He had a 4.02 ERA over three starts with Class AA Altoona and a 6.04 ERA over four starts with Class AAA Indianapolis this year.

Since Kranick has not been in the minors for a minimum of 15 days (or 10 days for position players), he can only be recalled if the Pirates place a player on the injured list, or if he is the 27th player for the second game of a doubleheader. The club did not make a corresponding move ahead of their potential contest against the Mets Thursday.
