Good morning!
We're turning seven years old this month, and we're working to ensure the word 'old' never gets taken too literally in relation to this business. That's never easy for anyone, the longer they stick around, but it's obviously important. Have to keep the kids interested.
Here are the age metrics for our users, per Google Analytics, thus far in 2021:
• 18-24: 9.8%
• 25-34: 20.9%
• 35-44: 18.1%
• 45-54: 22.1%
• 55-64: 17.9%
• 65-plus: 11.4%
Surprised at all?
Yeah, I usually am, too. It might be because our Asylum feels like it skews older with the comments often reflecting generations past. But fewer than 5% of our readers even open comments, which means they're readers and nothing but. And within that, those readers come with a very healthy component of youth, as one can see clearly with that second figure above, the 25-34.
As we celebrate this anniversary, we're mindful of the need to stay fresh and to keep our eyes and ears open for what kind of content that generation prefers, as well as how it's delivered. That can be challenging on this end, as one might imagine. We have a staff that's diverse in all ways, and age is one of them. But we're also aware that, just because a reader is young, that doesn't mean he or she won't value the solid, steady, reliable and enterprising reporting a staff like ours can offer. It might just be a matter of taking the same content and wrapping it up differently.
Don't get me wrong, please: We value all readers equally. That's not puff. We've backed that up.
Just need to always keep one eye on ... well, that distant day that the Pirates will be contending again, right?
• Brewing question: If you're 35 or younger -- sorry for the age requirement this week, but I'm genuinely curious -- what would you like to see us change or improve? What do you like most about what we already offer?
WELCOME!
• If you're new to this app/site, we're happy to have you! We encourage you to learn about our site's pioneering history, how we were the first company of its kind anywhere in North America, and how we're proud to having inspired similar ventures across the continent and even overseas. We've built this place the old-fashioned way, with our own hands and hard work.
• Download our free, state-of-the-art app: Apple or Android. These were custom-built, completely from scratch, in 2020.
• My Grind columns open each week with the 21 Takes on Monday morning, and they're then whipped up whenever warranted. Usually three a week, but it's about to get a lot busier than that.
• Every weekday morning on our DK Pittsburgh Sports podcasting network, I offer up three Daily Shot shows, one each on Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. Every Tuesday night, we've got The Ramon Foster Show in both video and audio formats. And along the way, our staff's crafting specialty podcasts on the Steelers, Penguins, Pirates, Pitt and Penn State. Subscribe to our podcasts for free at any of these platforms, including Apple and Spotify.
• Speaking of video, please subscribe -- for free -- to our revitalized YouTube channel. We've got tons of terrific, original video content there, fresh every day.
• Tap the button marked LIVE -- bottom right of the app, top right of the site -- and it'll take you to our staff Twitter feed without leaving us. Track our news. Track our pics. Track our videos. And do that almost as immediately as we're experiencing these things ourselves. I've wanted this feature forever, and I couldn't be happier myself that we're offering it.
• If you ever need anything from us, feel free to email us at Help@DKPittsburghSports.com!
