PHOENIX -- There’s three.

Per a source, third-round draft pick Bubba Chandler has a deal in place with the Pirates that will pay him $3 million, pending a physical. He is in Pittsburgh Wednesday.

Chandler and the Pirates quickly had a deal in place shortly after being taken in the third round of the First Year Player draft last Monday, but waited to make it official until they knew there was the money available.

This news comes one day after the Pirates signed second-round pick Anthony Solometo. The left-hander received $2.8 million, also significantly over-slot.

Chandler was one of this year's top draft prospects, being ranked as the No. 20 player available by Baseball America and No. 21 by MLB Pipeline, but signability concerns made him drop to the third round. Chandler had committed to play quarterback for Clemson football, and many teams were unwilling to pay him the bonus it would require to sign him without also inheriting the risk of him playing football instead.

The Pirates had the largest bonus pool this year and signed first overall pick Henry Davis significantly under-slot, creating room for them to give high school players big bonuses. Chandler called Clemson to forgo his commitment shortly after being picked by the Pirates.

Chandler works with a four pitch mix, including a fastball that sits in the low-90s but has revved up to 97 mph. He also has a slider and curve with spin and a developing changeup.

He went 8-1 with a 1.25 ERA and 96 strikeouts over 44 2/3 innings as a senior for North Oconee High School in Georgia.

There is also a handshake agreement in place for Chandler to get a look as a hitter with the Pirates. He also played shortstop in high school and hit .411 with 12 doubles, eight home runs and 35 RBIs.

The signing means the Pirates are $100,000 over-slot with their picks, with still two players from day two to sign: Competitive Balance Round B pick outfielder Lonnie White Jr. and fourth-round right-hander Owen Kellington. White would almost certainly require more than his slot bonus to sign.

Teams are allowed to spend up to an additional 5% of their bonus pool without the penalty of losing draft picks, creating an additional $700,000 of room. The Chandler signing dips into that, and leaves about $600,000 remaining, in addition to the combined $1,621,700 those two picks carry.
