Anderson trade to Phillies for pair of prospects hits reported 'snag' taken at PNC Park (Pirates)

Tyler Anderson.

Hours before his scheduled start Tuesday, the Pirates had a trade in place that would send left-hander Tyler Anderson to the Phillies, a source told DK Pittsburgh Sports.

However, that deal has hit a "snag," according to Jon Heyman. According to a source, the last remaining part of the trade were the medical reports. Ken Rosenthal reports the issue is with one of the two prospects the Pirates were acquiring from the Phillies.

Anderson was seen throwing in the Pirates' bullpen Tuesday after the trade was reported.

If the deal is completed as originally agreed to, the Pirates would receive minor-league right-hander Cristian Hernandez and catcher Abrahan Gutierez from the Phillies.

Baseball America ranked Hernandez as the Phillies No. 25 prospect and Gutierez their No. 27 in their midseason update.

Hernandez, is 2-5 with a 3.49 ERA over 14 games pitched, 12 of them starts, for the Phillies' Class Low-A affiliate in Clearwater, Fla. He has struck out 31.2% of his batters faced while holding hitters to a .218 average with a WHIP of 1.20.

Gutierez, 21, is having his best season at the plate so far this year, also playing for the Clearwater Threshers. He is slashing .285/.418/.424 with five home runs and 29 RBIs over 213 plate appearances.

Both players will be Rule 5 eligible this offseason.

Unlike most of the players the Pirates had on the trade block, Anderson was on a one-year deal, making a trade far more likely. With the timing of a potential deal, the Pirates opted to trade him rather than let him make one more start.

Anderson signed as a free agent shortly after pitchers and catchers reported last February. He went 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA over his 18 starts, all of which lasted at least five innings.

The Pirates will start Luis Oviedo Tuesday in place of Anderson.

The Pirates also promoted Rodolfo Castro from Altoona to fill Adam Frazier's spot in the lineup and Cody Ponce to replace Clay Holmes.

More to come.
