The Penguins lost a versatile, hard-working forward when Frederick Gaudreau signed with Minnesota Wednesday.
It didn't take them long to replace him, though.
And they did it with a guy they really, really seem to like.
The Penguins signed free-agent forward Brock McGinn, previously of Carolina, to a four-year contract with a salary-cap hit of $2.75 million.
That's twice what the Wild will play Gaudreau, and for twice as many years.
McGinn, 27, is 6 foot, 187 pounds. He had eight goals and five assists in 37 regular-season games, then added three goals and one assist in 11 playoff appearances.
His most productive season in the NHL was 2017-18, when he had 16 goals and 14 assists in 80 games with the Hurricanes.
McGinn was a left winger in Carolina and presumably will be slotted into the Penguins' bottom-six, but it was not immediately clear where Mike Sullivan will deploy him.
With the Hurricanes, he had a reputation for generating a lot of scoring chances with his hard work, but capitalizing on only a small percentage of them.
