The Penguins were one of the first teams to announce a signing on Day 2 of free agency in the NHL.
Whether adding forward Michael Chaput, late of Arizona, will primarily benefit them or their farm team in Wilkes-Barre remains to be seen, however.
He got a one-year, two-way deal that will be worth $750,000 at the NHL level.
Chaput, 29, is 6 foot 2, 199 pounds and did not have a point in 13 games with the Coyotes last season.
He has six goals and 16 assists in 182 career NHL games, which include stints with Columbus, Vancouver, Montreal and Arizona.
Chaput also has appeared in 388 games in the American Hockey League, putting up 109 goals and 150 assists.
