RICHMOND, Va. -- Five years into creating the Cartoon Canon strip, and I’m finally getting to the Pittsburgh Triangles, who captured the Bancroft Cup in 1975 as champions of World Team Tennis. Theirs was very bright and exciting, if very brief, history, and I’m glad to have finally taken the time to investigate it a bit.
Some of the more interesting discoveries of my research: That the popular Vitas Gerulaitis had a very legitimate claim to the title of “best mullet to ever call Civic Arena home,” at least until Jaromir Jagr came to town 17 years later. That the Cleveland Nets played several “home” games at the Igloo after the Triangles’ demise, meaning that Pittsburgh and Cleveland essentially once shared a team. And perhaps wildest of all, that the aforementioned Gerulaitis was engaged to none other than actress Janet Jones from 1985-87, who would just a year later go on to marry the second-best hockey player of all time!
