UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State made a big move up in The Associated Press poll this week, jumping from No. 10 to No. 6 after its 28-20 win over Auburn on Saturday night.

Iowa is No. 5 in the AP poll and is the highest-ranked team from the Big Ten, followed by the Nittany Lions at No. 6. Ohio State dropped one spot to No. 10.

In the coaches poll, Penn State is No. 8, while Iowa is No. 6 and Ohio State No. 12.

That led to a good question from one of our commenters here at DK Pittsburgh Sports, AJS, who posted this question Sunday: "When was the last time OSU had 2 teams from the B1G ranked ahead of them in the polls?"

We did some digging and found the answer, with the help of the outstanding database site CollegePollArchive.com.

You have to go back four years, to the 2017 season, to find a time when two Big Ten teams were ranked ahead of the Buckeyes in the AP poll.

In the Oct. 22 poll that year, Penn State was 7-0 and ranked No. 2. Wisconsin was No. 5, and Ohio State was No. 6.

That week holds interesting significance because Penn State went to Columbus to play the Buckeyes in what turned out to be an amazing game.

Trace McSorley and the Lions led 35-20 in the fourth quarter before J.T. Barrett and the Buckeyes stormed back. Barrett completed 16 consecutive passes, finishing with a 16-yard TD pass to Marcus Baugh with 1:48 remaining to give Ohio State the lead and a 39-38 win.

Ohio State jumped Penn State in the AP poll that week, and that was the last time two other Big Ten teams were ranked ahead of the Buckeyes.

Penn State has home games the next two weeks against Villanova and Indiana, then will visit Iowa on Oct. 9. The Hawkeyes have games coming up against Colorado State and Maryland.

So, both the Lions and Hawkeyes very well should be undefeated and perhaps both ranked in the top five when they meet at Kinnick Stadium in three weeks.
