RICHMOND, Va. -- Having experienced it firsthand, I’ve always kinda pointed to this particular game as the one where the Pittsburgh Steelers became THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS again, finally, after a miserable dearth of success (the 1989 Wild Card game notwithstanding) that stretched back to the mid-80s.True, the team was a respectable 4-2 at the time, but they’d suffered a couple of listless losses in the weeks that preceded it, and the just was still out on whether rookie head coach Bill Cowher’s early-season performance had been beginner’s luck or the beginning of something special.
They settled that debate on this night, in resounding fashion, rising to the occasion under a national spotlight and dominating their division rival to the tune of 118 yards and zero points allowed.
The 1992 Steelers would go on to post their first 11-win season in over a decade, and though there would still be growing pains along the way, reestablished themselves as one of the top teams in the AFC and a perennial contender, a status the team and their fans embrace to this day.
