Penguins forward Anthony Angello passed through waivers unclaimed on Sunday afternoon.
Angello is now eligible to be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, but hasn't been assigned yet. Angello can still play 10 games or spend up to 30 days on the NHL roster before needing waivers again.
If Angello is assigned to Wilkes-Barre, it would bring the number of players in camp under contract down to 25.
The Penguins did not put any players on waivers on Sunday. With season-opening 23-man rosters being due on Monday at 5 p.m., Sunday was the last opportunity to put a player on waivers and have them off the roster before that deadline.
Putting Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on injured reserve to start the season would open up two more roster spots, but it can't be done until after the rosters are due. One path the Penguins could take to finalize the opening roster would be to "assign" Radim Zohorna and Drew O'Connor to Wilkes-Barre on paper since they don't require waivers, put Crosby and Malkin on injured reserve, then "recall" Zohorna and O'Connor again after those spots are opened up.
