RICHMOND, Va. -- The entirety of Game 7 of the 1979 World Series is available on YouTube (as is the 11pm KDKA newscast from that night, definitely an entertaining time capsule), and I was watching the game, I began thinking, as I often do, about time.

Specifically, about how the span of time between the Pirates first and last championships was 70 years, and how there were no doubt plenty of old-timers who witnessed them both (not to mention the other three titles the Bucs won over that span).

I also thought about how it’s been 42 years since the Pirates’ last World Series win, by far the longest championship (or even World Series appearance) drought in the team’s century and a half of existence. And perhaps most depressingly, I thought about how unlikely it seems -- as I turn 50 next month -- that I’ll be as lucky as those old-timers in 1979 were, and even see a second title while I’m still around!
