The Pirates are adding another coach to their major league staff, per source.

Radley Haddad will join the staff in a new position the club is referring to as “Game Planning and Strategy.”

Going off of Haddad’s updated Twitter bio, the focus will be on run prevention.

Haddad is a former minor-league catcher, made the transition to coaching with the Yankees in 2017 as a coaching assistant and bullpen catcher. At just 31 years old, Haddad is a fast-riser in the league’s coaching circle.

He will be joining a coaching staff that has an emphasis on catching. Manager Derek Shelton was once a catcher in the Yankees’ farm system, major league coach Glenn Sherlock has a strong background in catching and bullpen catcher/catching assistant Jordan Comadena was an integral part of Jacob Stallings’ evolution into a Gold Glove catcher.

Haddad graduated from Butler University in 2013 with a finance degree.

Additionally, according to a source, Mike Rabelo, who will take over as third base coach, will also retain his field coordinator duties. That job entailed assisting in practice design, player development and acting as a bridge between the major league staff and minor-league players, among other duties.

The club has yet to officially announce Rabelo’s new role or the hiring of new hitting coach Andy Haines. It’s not yet known if Haddad will be the final addition to the Pirates’ coaching staff or if they will add one more, as a source indicated last week there were one or two moves on the horizon.

With Haddad’s addition, the Pirates’ major league coaching staff is up to 12 full-time members, the same as it was last season.

All of the remaining coaching staff, outside of former third base coach Joey Cora and hitting coach Rick Eckstein, will return in 2022, though some roles could change, like it did for Rabelo.
