Rutherford named president, interim GM in Vancouver taken at PPG Paints Arena (Penguins)

Jim Rutherford.

It took nearly a year, but Jim Rutherford is back in the game.

Rutherford has been named president of hockey operations and interim GM in Vancouver, where GM Jim Benning and coach Travis Green were fired early this week.

Rutherford resigned as GM of the Penguins in January and eventually was replaced by Ron Hextall.

He had returned to North Carolina, where he had a long run as GM of the Hurricanes, earlier this year, and had made no secret of his desire to get a front-office position with another club after he left the Penguins.

Rutherford is an aggressive trader, so it won't be surprising if he tries to make some major moves to get the Canucks into playoff contention, even as he searches for a full-time GM.
