ALTOONA, Pa. -- The epitome of brutality is typically when a major conference team loses to a mid-major team just like Pitt did with their 56-52 loss to Monmouth Sunday night at the Petersen Events Center. With the loss the Panthers fall to 3-7 on the season.
What was even more brutal than losing to the Hawks was the manner in which Pitt lost. They outscored Monmouth by 13 points in the second half, yet that still wasn't enough after the Panthers shot a brutally awful 22.2 percent from the field in the second half managing to only put 19 points on the board to the Hawks' 36.
Pitt just didn't have many answers for Monmouth's George Papas who had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Hawks as he went 4-for-13 from behind the arc.
It wasn't all doom and gloom for the Panthers as senior guard Jamarius Burton scored 15 points while John Hugley and Femi Odukale both pitched in 14 points. Outside of those three only four other Pitt players scored with none scoring more than four points on the night. Hugley also added a team-high 13 boards for the Panthers.
The ability Pitt showed in coming back and making it a game in the second half can't be understated as that could provide the spark this team desperately needs as it falls further behind in the ACC Conference.
