RICHMOND, Va. -- When I’m researching topics for Cartoon Canon strips, especially at slow times of year, I’ll often start with a question based on some timely event ('Have the Penguins ever played on Leap Day?') or statistical landmark ('Who was the first team the Penguins ever shut out?'), look up the facts, and then go from there.
This week’s query, 'What’s the most goals the team has ever scored in one period?' led to a very satisfying answer; Not only an opportunity to depict those funky, fantastic Quebec Nordiques uniforms, but to share the somewhat surprising fact that the Penguins’ most prolific period ever in terms of scoring goals was accomplished by a team that didn’t boast Mario Lemieux in the lineup!
