INDIANAPOLIS -- The NFL announced on Monday the host teams for its five international games in 2022.
And the slate of games means the Steelers won't be headed overseas in the upcoming season. They weren't chosen as a host team and also don't play any of the teams slated to host the 2022 international games.
The Packers will head overseas for the first time in their history, hosting a game at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. That site also will have a game with the Saints serving as the home team, while Wembley Stadium in London will be the site of a Jaguars game.
The Cardinals will host the first game in Mexico since 2019 at Stadium Azteca in Mexico City, while Tampa Bay will host the NFL's first game in Germany, playing at Munich's FC Bayern Munich Stadium.
The Steelers, who have long wanted to play a game in Mexico, where they have a strong fan base, will have to wait at least another year to see that happen. The Steelers applied for and were one of nine teams given international marketing rights in Mexico last year.
The Steelers last -- and only -- trip overseas for a regular season game came in 2013 in London where they were the visitors in a game against the Vikings.
With the Packers now playing their first regular season game on foreign soil, the Steelers will have gone the longest of any of the league's 32 teams without playing an international game.
The Steelers' lease with Heinz Field, signed in 2001, runs through 2030 and states that the team cannot play any of its regular season home games at another venue without voiding. That means that to play an international game, the Steelers must be the road team.
