The search for a successor to Kevin Colbert is over, ending back where it started.
According to multiple reports, the Steelers are set to name current vice president of football and business administration Omar Khan general manager with Eagles vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl as his assistant general manager.
Khan, 45, was one of the first people interviewed by Steelers president Art Rooney II for the position, which became open when Kevin Colbert retired at the conclusion of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Khan joined the Steelers in 2001 as football administration coordinator and has risen over the years. His primary responsibility has been that of chief negotiator for the team in contract talks.
The hiring of Khan, who also has worked for the Saints, represents a change of sorts for the Steelers, who have always had a former professional scout in the position of running the scouting department, the primary duty of the general manager/director of football operations.
That led the team to the hiring of Weidl, as well. A native of Mt. Lebanon, Weidl will likely handle the scouting portion of the job, with Khan continuing in his duties on the administration side of things.
Weidl has been with the Eagles since 2016. Prior to his stint in Philadelphia, he was in the Ravens scouting department. Weidl also has worked with the Saints and began his career with the Steelers as a player personnel assistant in 1998 and 1999 under former director of football operations Tom Donahoe.
The hiring of Weidl means Brandon Hunt, the team's other internal candidate, was passed over for the position. Hunt is the team's director of pro scouting.
Also among the finalists were John Spytek of the Buccaneers, Ryan Cowden of the Titans and former Bills general manager Doug Whaley, who also a former director of pro scouting with the Steelers. Those six came from a list of 16 people initially interviewed for the position.
Colbert retired after 22 years with the Steelers.
