Pirates trade Perez to Mets for cash taken at PNC Park (Pirates)

Michael Perez is congratulated by third base coach Mike Rabelo.

For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Pirates and Mets hooked up for a trade. The Pirates announced Saturday they've traded Michael Perez to the Mets in exchange for cash.

Perez stepped into a larger role when Roberto Pérez was sidelined with a season-ending injury in May. In 39 games with the Pirates this season, Perez slashed .150/.209/.318 with six home runs and 11 RBIs. Three of those six long balls came in a three-homer game on July 1 -- just one day after Bryan Reynolds accomplished the same feat.

Behind the plate, Perez ranks in the 23rd percentile in pop time to second base and the 16th percentile in pitch framing.

There isn't a market for a catcher batting .150 that also ranks low in key defensive metrics. However, the Pirates designated Perez for assignment Friday, which allows a club to take him without dedicating a 40-man roster spot. With Jason Delay performing well enough alongside Tyler Heineman, the Pirates were able to salvage some cash with this trade.

Less than an hour prior to Friday's first pitch, the Pirates traded Daniel Vogelbach to the Mets for right-handed reliever Colin Holderman. With the announcement of the Perez trade, the Pirates also announced Holderman has been optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis.
