LATROBE, Pa. -- An independent arbitrator has ruled Deshaun Watson must miss the first six games of the NFL season for violation of the NFL personal conduct policy, a ruling that means the quarterback will miss the Browns' Week 3 game against the Steelers in Cleveland.
But the NFL is expected to appeal the decision made by retired judge Sue Robinson. The appeal would be determined by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. That appeal must be filed in the next three days.
The NFLPA also has the right to appeal Robinson's decision.
Watson, signed by the Browns to a five-year, $230-million contract that was fully guaranteed after the Browns made a trade with the Texans to acquire his rights, was accused of sexual misconduct involving nearly two dozen massage therapists.
Watson, 26, sat out the entire 2021 season while with the Texans. Watson, 26, had requested a trade following the 2020 season.
With Watson facing suspension, Cleveland also has signed Jacoby Brissett, Josh Dobbs and Josh Rosen this offseason, giving the team four new quarterbacks this season.
In addition to hosting the Steelers in Week 3, the Browns also open the season at Carolina and are at Atlanta in Week 4. Former Browns starter Baker Mayfield is expected to be the starter for the Panthers.
The Browns also have home games against the Jets, Chargers and Patriots without Watson. He could potentially return for a Week 7 game in Baltimore against the Ravens.
