Rodolfo Castro won't do it again.

But he'll also appeal Major League Baseball's one-game suspension, delivered Tuesday afternoon, for playing with a cell phone in his back pocket a week ago in the Pirates' 6-4 loss to the Diamondbacks in Phoenix, a scene that became a meme worldwide.

"I do know that it was a mistake," Castro said in the PNC Park clubhouse via team interpreter Mike Gonzalez. "It's not something I did consciously. It’s something I truly didn’t intend to happen. Mostly, I just want MLB to hear my version and make sure they understand my heart behind everything."

He repeatedly expressed nothing but contrition over the event, including when I asked what steps he's taking to prevent a repeat.

"It's just being very intentional and mindful, especially in the pregame," Castro replied, "to disconnect from any electronic devices, to disconnect from anything that doesn't involve the game. This is something I grew from, and I definitely learned a huge lesson from it. I can guarantee it won't happen again."
