The Pittsburgh chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America announced their yearly award winners Monday and, unsurprisngly, Bryan Reynolds is the winner of the Roberto Clemente award for the team MVP.
Mitch Keller is the winner of the Steve Blass award as the team's top pticher, and Michael Chavis, who was designated for assignment last week, won the Chuck Tanner award for being the most media friendly.
Reynolds received 24 of a possible 27 points in weighted balloting for the award, while Keller received 23 points. The runners-up were Oneil Cruz and David Bednar, respectively. Chavis received 12 points, just edging out Wil Crowe with 11.
Reynolds has had another fine offensive season, even if it's not quite to the same level as 2021 — when he also won the award. He has slashed .260/.343/.459 with a career-high 27 home runs while also driving in 61.
Baseball Reference values him as the second-best player on the team in terms of WAR (2.9), behind only Ke'Bryan Hayes (4.2).
For Keller, 2022 was a potential make-or-break year for the former top-pitching prospect, and he delivered. After a shaky first six weeks that saw him briefly move to the bullpen, he has put together a strong run behind a new five-pitch mix and renewed confidence.
On the season, he is 5-12 with a 3.92 ERA and 133 strikeouts over 154 innings pitched. In his 15 starts since the start of July, he has recorded a 2.89 ERA and pitched at least six innings 11 times.
