Well ... the Penguins dropped their sixth game in a row on Wednesday night, blowing another multi-goal lead and ultimately falling to the Sabres 6-3 in Buffalo.
It won't make anyone feel any better about the current state of the team, but before things got out of hand, Kris Letang made a beautiful pass to spring Jake Guentzel for his third-period tally. It'll wind up on his career highlights tape:
That. Is. Surgical. Pinpoint precision. And for the puck to remain so crisp as it saucered through the air? Ridiculous.
Opening the third period on the power play, the Penguins won the draw as everyone began to regroup and fan out, except for Guentzel, who darted to the wall at the left wing blue line. The Sabres went into their penalty-kill forecheck, but parted the seas -- legitimately right up the middle -- for Letang to take advantage.
Guentzel recognized the opening and dashed behind a Sabres defender along the blue line, popping out in the open right as Letang's pass landed on his blade.
Not to be overlooked, Guentzel capped off the great play by deceiving Eric Comrie with the angle of his stick blade until he released his shot. Planting all of his weight on his left leg for more force, Guentzel's blade was closed on the puck and angled down just before the slightest roll of his wrists to open his blade. He promptly unleashed a laser to the back of the net.
That's now five goals in seven games for Guentzel, and 13 goals in his last 14 games dating back to the 2022 postseason.
