One day after announcing the signing of Carlos Santana, the Pirates made their corresponding 40 man roster move Wednesday by designating first baseman Lewin Díaz for assignment.
Díaz was claimed off waivers from the Marlins on Nov. 22. The signing of Santana gave the Pirates two new major-league first basemen -- the other being Ji-Man Choi -- and caused Díaz to get booted off the roster.
Díaz, 26, was one of the game's best defensive first basemen in 2022, with Baseball Savant grading his defense at 4 Outs Above Average in just 410 innings in the field. However, he hit just .169 with a .512 OPS and five home runs in 174 plate appearances.
The Pirates' roster is currently at 40.
