Mike Tomlin has made his decision regarding his offensive coordinator.

Matt Canada will stay on for the final year of his contract as the Steelers' offensive coordinator, team spokesman Burt Lauten confirmed with DK Pittsburgh Sports.

External questions about Canada's job security surrounded the team throughout the 2022 season, especially during the first half of the year when the offense was near the bottom of the league in virtually every statistical category.

However, the offense operated much more efficiently during the second half of the season, including 146.0 rushing yards per game. That coincided with a 7-2 finish that had the Steelers fighting for playoff contention in the final week of the season. Even with the strong finish, the offense ranked 26th with 18.1 points per game and 23rd in yards per game at season's end.

Tomlin stuck with Canada throughout the season, and even went as far to say that "he got better" as the team got better down the stretch during his end of season press conference. At the end of the day, the Steelers never really had any serious thoughts of replacing Canada this offseason, per source. The team will also not have any need to make any formal announcement about Canada's job since he is already under contract.

Keeping Canada on won't be popular with the fan base, many of whom have been calling for Canada's job all season long. However, keeping him for the final year of his contract will provide continuity for Kenny Pickett and a young offense that began to find its footing down the stretch. Of course, in order to earn another contract, the offense will have to take larger strides in 2023.
