Freeze Frame: P.Oh No! taken at PPG Paints Arena (Penguins)

P.O Joseph battles for a loose puck with Sharks forward Noah Gregor Saturday at PPG Paints Arena.

There was no shortage of self-inflicted wounds from the Penguins in their 6-4 loss to the Sharks Saturday night at PPG Paints Arena. It wasn't any one thing or any individual player that sunk them, but rather a culmination of issues.

Despite that, they were tied, 4-4, late in regulation. That is, until P.O Joseph and Chad Ruhwedel teamed up for an all-too-fitting error that ultimately cost the game.

Have a look at what happened:

Things started off pretty well, right? Nothing too complex, just a nice and easy controlled breakout. Sort of.

Joseph swooped in on the puck behind the Penguins' net and utilized crossover strides to build speed and carry his momentum while dashing up ice. Things got a little dicey, though, when the Sharks applied pressure to Joseph before exiting the zone.

One of the most effective ways to transition the puck as a unit is to overlap with your teammate(s). Essentially, one skater shifts over into the lane of their teammate while the other does the same simultaneously. It may sound like a simple concept -- and it is -- but it's great at getting defensive coverage all out of sorts.

As pressure was applied to Joseph before reaching the blue line, his only real options were to take the outside lane or hold up entirely. The latter option surely would have gotten him swarmed and resulted in imminent danger the other way. Unfortunately, the former led to the back-breaking and game-winning goal.

Sidney Crosby had a great opportunity to overlap with Joseph and jump into the middle of the ice to give Joseph room to skate, but instead he just glided forward along the wall as his defender ran out of real estate and chucked a hopeless attempt at a dump right at a Sharks skater.

Ruhwedel made the grave mistake of not ensuring that Joseph's dump attempt actually made it deep in the zone and went off for a change as the Sharks quickly went on the counterattack.

Joseph got rubbed out on the wall and fell to the ice, leaving Jeff Petry as the only one back right after he hopped onto the ice for Ruhwedel. He made about a good a play as you'd hope to try and shut the rush down, but a nifty behind-the-back pass nullified his effort.
