RICHMOND, Va. -- Hockey players on the whole definitely seem like the kind of humble fellows who would gladly refuse to take credit for a point they didn’t earn, but this example, from relatively early in Mario Lemieux’s stellar career, still can’t help but bring a smile to your face.
I’ve been told by many folks who have met the man (I haven’t had the pleasure, myself) that he is exactly the person you’d hope he would be, gracious, friendly and personable.
For many players… well, most players… missing out on that seventh single-game point would no doubt really sting, as even six points in a game is almost too much to hope for. But the is Super Mario we’re talking about, and within months would follow up this near-miss with an eight point game, the first of three times in which he’d hit that mark. Among the 13 NHL Players ever to achieve the feat, his hat trick of 8-spots is the record, ’natch!
